In just seven two-hour sessions, parents learn how to show love while setting limits, children develop skills in handling peer pressure and building a positive future, and families grow and have fun together. That’s the focus of ISU Extension’s Strengthening Families 10-14 Program. Students who are in grades 4, 5, 6, and 7 along with their parents or guardians are encouraged to participate. The program is free and will run simultaneously in Onawa and Mapleton for all Monona County families. Participants can attend each session at the location that is most convenient for their schedules on seven evenings, 6:30-8:30 PM, November through January. Dates and locations are as follows: Maple Valley High School Media Center: November 23 and 30, December 7 and 21, and January 4, 11, and 18; West Monona Middle School: November 12 and 19, December 3 and 17, and January 7, 14, and 21. Brochures are available at both schools, churches, and at the Monona County Extension Office. Registrations are due to the Monona County Extension Office by November 5. Free child care is available if requested.
Iowa State University has evaluated the Strengthening Families Program 10-14 with hundreds of families. Compared with families who were not in the program youth had significantly lower rates of alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana use; youth had significantly fewer conduct problems in school; and parents learned to build a positive relationship with their children, set appropriate limits, and follow through on consequences.
Program instructors will be Cheri Hardison, ISU Extension; Mary Black, West Monona School; Bethany Mallory, Maple Valley School, and Teresa Miller, Jackson Recovery.
To ask questions or sign up, contact the Monona County Extension Office at 712/423-2175 by November 5.
