Why a Safe Room Project?
At 6:35 p.m. on June 11, 2008, an EF3 tornado struck the Little Sioux Scout Ranch in Western Iowa where 96 boys and 25 staff members were attending a National Youth Leadership Training course. The devastation left four boys killed and 48 injured. Counselors reported only five minutes prevailed between sighting the funnel cloud and touchdown at the camp. There were no tornado shelters available.
Iowa 4-H Center
Established in 1950, the Iowa 4-H Center sits on 1,100 acres in the heart of the Des Moines River Valley near Madrid, Boone County.
During the summer months, the Center hosts 5,000 people, most of whom are youth ages 6-17.
The 4-H Center also hosts other groups including county 4-H camps, 4-H clubs, church camps & retreats, family reunions, corporate retreats, weddings, parties, and more.
Current storm shelters at the 4-H Center consist of two basements, lodge bathrooms and innermost rooms. Many of the current storm shelters are more than five minutes from main camp.
The 4-H Center has an emergency management plan and the staff continually monitor the weather. Storms do happen and Boone County averages one tornado or high wind event annually. The potential at-risk population on a max capacity day would be 750 people.
About the Tornado Safe Rooms
The Iowa 4-H Foundation cares deeply about the safety of our youth. A grant request was submitted to FEMA to cover a portion of the cost to build two safe rooms that would withstand 250 mph sustained winds for two hours.
Due to the expansive size of the camp, there would need to be two safe rooms built so that campers could reach a safe room within five minutes.
Each Safe Room will accommodate 377 people. Combined, the two facilities offer 3,888 sq. ft. of usable indoor recreational and educational space.
· North Safe Room will be used as an indoor climbing facility
· South Safe Room will be used as an auditorium and classroom space
We need your support to ensure the utmost safety of our youth. Please make a donation or pledge your support today!
