FROM YOUR SUPERINTENDET_ VERY IMPORTANT:
Greeting Everyone -
Fair is getting closer than we realize and I just want to remind you of a few things that should be happening about now.
1 - By now you should have gotten your poultry to exhibit at fair with the exception of Market Broilers. Broilers should be about 6 - 8 weeks at fair time.
2 - This year you will need to have you poultry ID sheets turned into the extension office by MAY 15th just as all other live stock. Broilers will be later.
3 - This year all exhibits will have to have a leg band to identify the bird, this number will need to be on the ID sheets that are due to the extension.
4 - There is a Poultry Meeting on Thursday 4/26 in the extension office downtown. The meeting is at 6:30 and anyone is welcome but it is mainly for new members.
Now with all that being said here are some thing I need from you.
1 - I need to know how many birds you are planning on bringing and what size. This is so I can order your leg bands. I need this information by Friday 4/20. At this time I don't care about the class and division I only need count and size. Here is an example of what I need -- maybe you plan to bring 4 bantams, 2 standard chicken, 1 turkey or 1 peacock, 2 standard ducks, 10 call ducks. Please be specific as a bantam leg band will not fit a standard chicken or turkey. No information is better than to little. YOU MUST HAVE A LEG BAND TO ID YOUR POULTRY AND SHOW AT FAIR -- THESE ARE DUE THE EXTENSION OFFICE 5/15. NO EXCEPTIONS.
2 - This year when you fill out our ID sheets you will need to have your fair books. Be sure to determine what breed, division, and class you birds will be in and have it correct on you live stock ID sheet. The open fair books have different information so you cannot us an open book for 4H ID sheets. If am a 4H exhibitor here is an example: If I am showing feather legged bantams 1 hen 1 pullet, 1 standard leg horn hen, 1 tom turkey my sheet would look like this:
Breed Division Class ID #
Bantam Feather Legged 127
Bantam Feather Legged 129
Large Mediterranean 99
Turkey 146
So when you ID "Polly chicken" and the ID sheet shows she is a standard leghorn hen with number 12 - she should show up at fair as a standard leghorn hen # 12 and not as a bantam rooster number 12 - that would be an issue. Please check your entries on the ID sheets before you turn them in.
If you have family members or friends that will be showing Open Class please let me know so I will have a count.
Please email me with you number and size.
If you have questions or concerns please let me know you can email or call 712-622-8327.
Thanks,
Teri
