Dog Project News and Information
! ! ! WELCOME TO THE DOG PROJECT ! ! !
DEADLINE TO ID YOUR DOGS, ONLINE, IS
§ The
§ The practices are held at the Mills County Fairgrounds, in Malvern, in the
§ Dog Project participants are also encouraged to further explore activities about dogs on their own, which could be presented in project form (a poster, video, written report, or display board, etc.) to be judged in conference judging, or just enjoyed for their own sake.
§ There is a special award for the Dog Project, the Buddy Memorial Exemplary Dog Award, given at the 4-H awards ceremony in November. One of the requirements for that award is participation in a dog activity outside of the Dog Show activities, such as listed in the item above. More suggestions are in the Dog Project section in the Fair Book. It doesn’t have to be a 4-H project for fair. A dog activity that you participate in and record in your record book is enough. Take a look and go for it!
§ At practices, 4-Hers need to wear comfortable, running-type shoes. No sandals or flip-flops allowed. Also, no dangly jewelry, rings, or gum.
§ All dogs MUST have a current Rabies vaccination to participate in the dog practices and shows. You will need to bring proof of this to the first practice and to the shows. All other standard vaccinations are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! Your dog should also be parasite free (from fleas, ticks and worms), relatively clean and claws clipped (if your dogs claws are too long they can’t go on the Agility equipment).
§ You will be responsible for cleaning up your dog’s accidents, so please be sure to bring paper towels and plastic bags.
§ No animal abuse will be tolerated.
§ Adults or others may assist/coach their 4-Her, but may not train the dog at the practices or at home. Parents and families please avoid giving the dog commands other than what the 4-Her is teaching the dog.
§ Younger siblings/guests need to be supervised by an adult, at the meetings and shows, at all times.
§ If there are severe storm warnings out when we have a dog meeting scheduled, we will probably cancel. If there is time, we will try to reach everyone by phone or e-mail, so please check your answering machines or computers. Please do not drop off your child and dog if the building is locked with no one there, especially if there is a storm at that time. (It has been done)
§ Be sure to get and READ your Fair Book Dog Project pages for further information about the dog shows, rules, and dress codes for showing.
§ Mosquitoes are bad at the practices when it is warm, so you may want to use repellant.
§ If you are interested in showing your dog at the Iowa State Fair, let us know at the practices so that we can make sure you are learning what you need. The deadline for signing up for the State Fair is July 1.
