ISU Celebrates 150 Years

Iowa State University is celebrating 150 years, serving as one of the world’s leading educational and research universities.  ISU kicked off the celebration at this spring on campus, and will continue commemorating this achievement throughout the 2007-2008 academic year.  For a complete list of celebrations and events, visit http://www.iastate.edu/~isu150/cal/cal.shtml or /150th/calendar.htm.

As a lasting legacy of Iowa State University’s Sesquicentennial celebration, ISU Extension is coordinating a service project in each county this summer and fall. Alumni and current students in each county are invited to participate, along with Extension staff, 4-H’ers and Extension county councils. When completed, ISU will present the county with a plaque to recognize the project.

In observance of this celebration, ISU and 4-H alumni, along with Mills County Extension staff, have designed a permanent sign that will be placed west of Glenwood along Highway 34.  The 14 foot sign highlights the Mills County Fair, ISU and 4-H.

Dr. Sally Prickett, Director, Veterinary Teaching Hospital, will officially represent ISU at the dedication of the service project on Saturday, July 14th, beginning at 10 a.m.  The public is invited to participate in the installation and dedication of the sign.  The project is being funded by ISU and 4-H alumni.

“We’re a century and a half old, but we don’t look it,” said Jack Payne, vice president for ISU Extension and Outreach.  “From hybrid seed corn to biofuels, Iowa State University Extension has been relevant to Iowans by addressing important issues.   Extension educators live in the communities where they work, so they can help connect Iowans to everything ISU has to offer.”
