Mills County has joined forces with surrounding counties to co-sponsor a Master Gardener training site every other year since 2001. Master Gardeners are trained volunteers who provide research-based, home horticulture information and education to local communities through ISU Extension programs and projects. Master Gardener program participants gain a broad knowledge base in 13 horticultural subject areas. In 2004, Mills County Master Gardeners contributed 775 hours of horticulture-related community service.
The Mills County Master Gardeners & Co-Horts is a county-wide group of Master Gardeners and avid local gardeners. The group assists with Mills County Extension horticulture programming, distributes horticulture education grants to local schools, maintains two landscape bed projects, coordinates the Mills County Residential Tree Planting Program, hosts the annual Mills County Garden Walk, and holds an annual plant sale fundraiser. For more information on the group, please contact the Mills County Extension Office at (712) 624-8616.
