  • REMINDERS FOR STATE FAIR AND AKSARBEN

  • Iowa State Fair Ak-Sar-Ben Livestock Show Beef, Sheep, Goats & Swine were required to be nominated during weigh in’s for the Iowa State Fair. Those animals that were nominated will now be required to submit additional paperwork. Dogs were required to be entered online by May 15th. All other animals such as rabbits and horses must have their information on 4-H Online by June 15th. ALL Iowa State Fair entries are due to the Extension Office by July 1, 2015. Please note this will be an additional entry than the county fair Fair Entry process. Check with the Extension Office to get fully enrolled for the Iowa State Fair! ENTRY FORMS are available online at www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/statefair/ livestock.htm. All entries must be submitted at the local County Extension Office prior to the deadline, July 1. All market beef, sheep, swine, and goats were required to be nominated during weigh in’s for the AkSar-Ben Livestock Show. June 15th— feeder calf and breeding beef nominations due to the Extension Office. August 10th all entries due to the Extension Office to final Ak-Sar-Ben entries.

Keeping young cows in the herd is critical to ensure enterprise profitability and facilitate herd expansion; particularly with decreased numbers in the national cow herd.  Plan to attend these clinics to learn more ways to keep her working for you.  Topics include nutrition, management, costs, health, reproductive management, and lifetime productivity.

owa State University Extension and Outreach in Harrison County is excited to announce that Annie’s Project will be offered in Logan. A steering committee met on December 15th in the conference room of the Harrison County Extension and Outreach Office.  The purpose of the meeting was to establish the dates, times and topics for this six week course.

20 Clues to Rural Survival will be held on January 22nd, 2015 from 11-3pm at the Congregational Church Fellowship Hall in Glenwood at 109 N Walnut St

 Bring our community together to learn the secrets of rural success
 Build on community strengths
 Create strategies for short-term goals and long-term development
 Take action to achieve the characteristics critical to the success of our rural community

This is an event where youth will learn more about beef production in Iowa, how to get the best product for their effort, and ways to increase the quality of their cattle for fair exhibits.  The event will be held at the Iowa Lakes Community Campus in Emmetsburg and is open to all youth in grades 4-12.  Cost is $5 per participant with lunch included.  Deadline for registering is January 16th.
