Sometimes the Shoe Doesn't Fit

The role of an effective mentor is rightfully perceived as promoting the personal growth and professional development of a new employee.  But what happens when it becomes apparent to the mentor that "the shoe doesn't fit" - the new employee is struggling and many not be well suited for the job?  Steve Johnson, Farm Management Field Specialist, has personal experience and offers this advice.

"Be a good listener and know that you don't have all the answers.  Be supportive of both University Extension and the policies which we must adhere to, understanding that we too question some aspects of our job.  If a mentee determines it's in his/her best interest to leave the system, keep the information confidential and continue to be supportive of the decision.  Allow the mentee adequate time and distance to provide closure to administrators, other colleagues and the public.  Finally, there's nothing wrong with continue to be a friend."
