Suggested Framework for Mentoring Process
- Initial Contact
The mentor contacts the new staff member within the first week of employment to welcome him/her to the Extension organization. This could be a phone call, visit, note or other personal contact.
- First Month of Employment
Th ementor sets up an initial meeting with the mentee within the first 2-4 weeks of the mentee's employment. Together they establish specific goals for the mentor/mentee relationship and steps to reach the goals. Both the mentor and the mentee should be clear about expectations.
- Monthly Contact During First Six Months
The mentor and the mentee meet face-to-face, as deemed necessary (at least bi-monthly).
- Six to Twelve Months
The mentor/mentee match will be reviewed after six months and continued for six additional months, if things are going well. Antoher mentor will be assigned, if evaluation indicates this would be more helpful. Contacts and meetings will continue, as agreed upon by the mentor/mentee.
