Expectations of the Mentee
The mentee will be responsible for cooperating with the mentor to carry out the objectives of the mentoring program within the framework of the overall goals of ISU Extension.
Objective: Complement established orientation program.
The mentee will:
- Respond to initial contacts by the mentor and make it a priority to schedule meetings and other contacts. Explain expectations of the relationship and be forthright in all respects with the mentor. Be realistic and maintain a positive attitude.
- Keep scheduled appointments with the mentor and maintain regular contact. Use the mentor's time effectively.
- Take responsibility for own learning experience and keep the mentor updated on progress.
Objective: Help new staff understand Extension and its role within Iowa State University.
The mentee will:
- Ask the mentor questions about the overall Extension program. have the mentor suggest staff meetings, trainings, conferences, etc. to add to the mentee's understanding.
- Be proactive to seek information and guidance of the mentor and others.
Objective: Build helping relationships between peers.
The mentee will:
- Understand what each staff person has to give as well as receive in peer relationships.
- Balance the personal and professional relationship with mentor. Maintain confidentiality.
- Recognize the help the mentor is giving and express appreciation.
Objective: Help staff realize their potential.
The mentee will:
- Enlist eh assistance of the mentor in setting both short- and long-term professional development goals.
- Demonstrate initiative. Solicit input from the mentor and act on it appropriately.
- Be flexible and open to constructive suggestions.
Objective: Integrate new staff into Extension personnel network/system.
The mentee will:
- Utilize the mentor's network to make acquaintances. Ask the mentor to make introductions to other staff and to ease entry into professional and social gatherings.
Objective: Promote benefits of membership in professional associations.
The mentee will:
- Discuss professional development with mentor.
- Initiate or continue membership in relevant professional associations.
- Take advantage of professional development opportunities at area, state and national levels.
Objective: Assist current staff making the transition from one position to another.
The mentee will:
- Seek the mentor's guidance when making transitions.
Objective: Provide additional support for current staff.
The mentee will:
- Be proactive to seek assistance and advice when needed.
