New field staff bring a variety of skills, education and experiences to positions within Iowa State University Extension. In a short time, they are expected to address specific as well as general issues within the parameters of Extension's mission. They are asked to serve the interests of clients, volunteers, Extension councils, Extension administration, university departments and colleges - all with a maze of economic, human and material resources.
The new ideas and high energy levels which new staff members bring to the organization can soon diminish without support and guidance. The proposed mentoring program will complement the established orientation program. It is about building relationships and is not intended to provide subject matter training.
The committee began its work by reviewing mentoring programs in Extension systems in: Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Nebraska, Ohio, Georgia, Mississippi and Colorado. They also looked at the American Red Cross mentoring program. The International Mentoring Association and the Professional Coaches and Mentors Associations were additional contacts.
Joe Batten, consultant, met with the committee and shared his philosophy about leadership and mentoring. Ann Maycunich, performance consultant with Iowa State University, assisted the committee in designing the mentoring program. Her previous experience in the private sector provided a valuable business perspective to the process. The committee gathered the best ideas and the contents from each program to help shape the concept of a mentoring program for ISU Extension.
The mentoring program will be available for all ISU Extension staff. New staff will be involved in a mentor/mentee relationship. Current staff can access the mentoring program on a voluntary basis. The Administrative Team will be supportive in helping establish a strong program. The mentoring program's success depends upon full support from all the team. Human Resources will assist where appropriate and as needed.
