Equine Advisory Committee

Mission
Provides unbiased, research based information to Iowa horse owners, focusing on horse care, behavior, health, nutrition and facility management that will increase the knowledge of horse owners and improve the quality of care for horses and their habitat in Iowa.

Description/Structure:

A public-private partnership is essential in building long lasting relationships to meet the educational needs of the Iowa equine industry. The members of the Equine Team and Equine Advisory Committee are active partners in the growth and development of the equine industry.

Equine Team – ISU Faculty and Employees

Member roles include:

  • Attend and actively participate in bi-annual horse team meetings

  • Provide vision for the horse program & Master Equine Manager program

  • Author research-based fact sheets and e-newsletter articles

  • Conduct research on issues important to Iowa horse owners

  • Help identify funding sources (grants and sponsorships) for horse owner programs

  • Help identify new delivery methods for extension programs

  • Help identify problems (needs assessments) and provide solutions for positive behavioral changes

  • Help evaluate Horse Extension programs and products

Equine Advisory Committee – Equine Organizations, Businesses, Owners and Master Equine Managers

Role: Assist in the evaluation of needs assessments and maintain communication with the Iowa horse community. The equine discussion group also assists the Horse Team with planning the vision and direction of the Horse Program, including identifying new partners and funding opportunities.

Advisory committee member roles include:

  • Attend and actively participate in bi-annual horse team meetings

  • Provide a source of objective, external feedback and well-constructed, positive solutions to current and futures problems and issues

  • Serve as outside reviewers for proposals and publications

  • Act as a vital sounding board for ideas and decisions

  • Become advocates for the mission of the ISU Horse Program.

  • Help identify problems (needs assessments) and provide solutions for positive behavioral changes

  • Help evaluate Horse Extension programs and products
