MASTER GARDENER 2009 BUS TOUR TRIP TO KANSAS CITY
Saturday, May 30, 2009
The highlight of our trip will be the orchids at Bird’s Botanicals. David Bird started a home based greenhouse business with 400 square feet of growing space. Since then, his collection has grown to include over 100 species and more than 200 varieties happily growing in a 6,000 square feet (soon to be 7,000 square feet) cave. No orchid cave would be complete without a gift shop! Bird’s Gift Shop has everything needed to get started and keep your orchids happy for years to come, as well as fountains and other garden items. Visit David Bird’s website at http://www.birdsbotanicals.com/
The Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens was founded to keep the city at the forefront of environmental and ecological issues. The Arboretum has 8 examples natural eco-systems from their most fragile Oak-Hickory Forest with its rich soil supporting an abundance of wildflowers to the newest 70 acre prairie restoration. Gardens at the Arboretum include a water garden, lakeside amphitheatre, woodlands, children’s garden, xeriscaping and a Monet garden; each more wonderful than the last. Check out their website at: http://www.opkansas.org/_Vis/Arboretum/index.cfm. We will have lunch (included in trip cost) at the Arboretum.
We will also visit one of the best places in the area for gardeners to shop – Heartland Nursery. The store has 80,000 square feet of space under a glass greenhouse. With over 120 parking spots, lots of carts, wide aisles and plants from every corner of the globe it is a gardener's paradise. Visit their website at http://www.heartlandnursery.com/
When it is time to head for home… We will stop for a bite to eat (on your own) on the way home and hope to have the buses unloaded and people in their cars by 9:30 p.m.
