Jim Nelson
|
Jim Nelson grew up on a farm near Prescott, IA, Adams County. He was an eleven-year member of the Union Stars 4-H Club. He attended the University of Iowa and received his BS in Pharmacy in 1959, and practiced his profession at Montross Pharmacy, Winterset, IA for 45 years. He also served as hospital pharmacist at the Madison County Memorial Hospital for eight years. Jim served two years on the Iowa State Extension Advisory Council and two years on the National Committee of the Council on Agriculture Research Education and Training (CARET). He took the Master Gardener training in 1992 and became a MG. He teaches the Vegetable Section of the Master Gardeners Program in Winterset and several surrounding counties. Jim served on the Madison County Fair Board for twenty-five years and encouraged youth participation in 4-H programs. |
Janis Hochstetler

Janis Hochstetler grew up on a diversified grain and livestock family farm near St. Charles, Iowa, graduating from Interstate 35 High School in 1987. She attended Iowa State University and graduated in 1991 with a B.S. Degree in Agricultural Studies and Agriculture Extension Education. She received her Masters Degree in Food Science at the University of Tennessee – Knoxville in 1994. Janis' career in the meat industry has included work in process control, quality assurance, food safety- HACCP and employee training. She has worked for Armour-Swift Eckrich in Minnesota and Kansas and Burke Corporation in Nevada, Iowa. Since 2000, Janis has worked for the for the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship’s Meat and Poultry Inspection Bureau. Her duties include assisting state of Iowa inspected meat and poultry plants with the regulatory requirements including food safety and coordinates the product/label approval process. Janis lends her expertise in these areas to train Iowa inspection staff and to assist consumers that contact the office. Janis has collaborated with Dr. Joe Cordray - Iowa State University Meat Extension Specialist and his graduate students- over the past 15 years. They provide training sessions for industry related to food safety, meat processing and meat regulatory issues. She also serves as a HACCP instructor at Iowa State sponsored Introductory HACCP Training. Janis serves as the assistant- superintendent for the 4H Exhibit Building and assists with the youth Swine show at the Madison Country Fair as well as judging record books. Shevolunteers as an evening host at the Iowa State Fair 4H Building. Janis, her husband Russ and son Moses are in a transition from living in Winterset, Iowa to the farm where Russ grew up northwest of Winterset. Janis decided to run for extension council after being asked by a long time friend. She wants to give back to the community by using her career and volunteer experiences to continue to support and improve the Madison County Extension Program. |
Christine Doonan |
Christine (Birney) Doonan grew up on a family farm in southeast Iowa near Washington. She graduated from Iowa State University in 1999 with a B.S. degree in Agricultural Business and a minor in Agronomy. In 1999, Christine began her in career with AGRILAND FS, Inc. in Harlan, Iowa. She moved to Winterset in fall 2005 to continue in the Marketing Coordinator position at the corporate offices of AGRILAND FS. As an active Washington County 4-H’er, she later served an internship as 4-H Program Assistant in Washington County. To continue involvement presently, Christine serves as the Extension Council liaison to the Madison County Youth & 4-H Committee. Christine currently serves as vice-chairperson of the Madison County Extension Council and has been a council member for 4 years. |
