     Dairy producers in Northwest Iowa will learn how to improve and manage their transition
     cow program at the 2016 Transition Cow Field Days hosted by Iowa State University
     Extension and Outreach specialists. 

“While transition cow management encompasses only 20 to 30 percent of the herd, it can ultimately influence the milk production and health of the entire herd,” said Ryan Breuer, ISU Extension and Outreach dairy specialist, “we want to inform producers on how to achieve better milk quality, how to improve calving and provide best management practices for record keeping.”

To help producers manage this economic transition, the Iowa Beef Center is partnering with the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, ABS Global, Accelerated Genetics, Select Sires and Merial to offer seven clinics across the state featuring breeding and selection for longevity and profit.

Strengthening Families Program: For Parents and Youth 10-14

Lyon County fifth and sixth grade students and their parents are invited to enroll in this free, six week program beginning Feb. 25.

     The 4-H Food Safety and Quality Assurance (FSQA) program will again be
     in place for the current 4-H year. FSQA stands for Food Safety Quality
     Assurance. This program helps 4-H producers understand their role in
     producing food, and help them make wise, ethical decisions related to food
     production. If you exhibit the following livestock are required to be FSQA
                                                                                        certified: Beef, Bottle/Bucket Calf, Dairy, Goat, Swine, Sheep, Rabbit (if it is
                                                                                        not a pet project), and Poultry. You MUST become FSQA certified to exhibit
                                                                                        your animals at the County Fair and/or Iowa State Fair.
