The theft of a disk drive containing names, social security numbers, and dates of birth for veterans has placed them in a growing pool of individuals who can become victims of identity theft. To confirm whether or not your personal information is being used for financial fraud, obtain a free copy of your credit report by calling 1-877-322-8228 or visiting www.annualcreditreport.com. By law, you are entitled to a free copy of your credit report annually from each of the three major credit reporting agencies - Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Rotate your requests every 4 months to monitor your credit report year round. Veterans and other victims of identity theft can learn more about ISU Extension resources at www.lifelearner.iastate.edu/idtheft.htm. A copy of the book, "Who is You? The Coming Epidemic of Identity Theft," by Steffen Schmidt, professor of political science and Michael McCoy is available at your local Extension office.
