Wellman Wins National Extension Award

Darbee Wellman, Agriculturalist for ISU Extension and Outreach in Henry and Lee counties has been named the 2014 National Winner of the National Association of County Agricultural Agents Communication Award in the Audio Recording category. She was recognized on July 22, 2014 at a special luncheon during the NACAA Annual Meeting in Mobile, Alabama. She was the only national communications winner selected from the state of Iowa for 2014.

Wellman was selected for a one-minute “Horticulture Highlight” that originally aired on KILJ Radio in Mount Pleasant and KOKX Radio in Keokuk. During the growing season of 2013, the Lee and Henry County Extension Offices developed a unique partnership with KILJ and KOKX with the purpose of educating the public on horticulture topics. Radio listeners have the opportunity to hear research-based Iowa State University information in these one-minute “Horticulture Highlights” each week during the growing season and over the holidays.

Working with Lee County Marketing Specialist Alex Merk, Wellman voices each of the radio spots. The segments are recorded and edited at the KILJ radio station by Anna Herreid, KILJ Production Manager. Topics include growing season issues, gardening tips, lawn care advice and other general horticulture information that listeners of all ages and gardening experience can benefit from. The winning educational audio recording on mosses originally aired the week of May 27, 2013.
