Due to new credit legislation, beginning March 1, 2005 Iowa residents will be able to get a free credit report from each of the three bureaus annually.
By checking your credit report you can make sure the information is accurate, complete, and up-to-date. It is also a preventative measure against identity thieves who may use your information to open credit accounts in your name. Then, when they don't pay the bills, the delinquent account is reported on your credit report.
Ordering your free report is a no-brainer, many are even recommending to spread out your reports. For example, order one from each bureau every four months, so that you can monitor your credit throughout the year. Keep in mind however, that each bureau keeps separate information so their may be differences in each report. If something is wrong, however, (identity theft, etc.) there is likely to be evidence of some sort that would permeate onto each of the reports.
A special website - http://www.annualcreditreport.com was developed specifically for the purpose of advertising the free annual credit reports. This site will give information on how to order yours either online, over the phone, or by mail.
For tips on how to read and understand your credit report, Iowa State University's Financial Clinic website - http://www.fcs.iastate.edu/financial has many good credit resources under their Credit Issues dropdown menu.
