2014 Business Plan Competition Gives Entrepreneurs Opportunity to Win up to $5000
Small business entrepreneurs in Lee County will be competing this winter for a chance to win up to $5000 for their business startup or expansion. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is hosting the 2014 Lee County Business Plan Competition: Planting the Seeds for Growing Businesses. Entrepreneurs are invited to submit their business plans from now until January 10, 2014. The plans will be given to a panel of experienced judges, who will give critiques and select finalists. The finalists will then make a presentation on their plan in order to win the competition.
In conjunction with the competition, the Iowa Small Business Development Center at SCC will be offering a 4-part class at the Extension office in Donnellson called Writing a Winning Business Plan for those entrepreneurs who may have a business idea but no written business plan. The class will be held on Monday evenings beginning November 18th from 6-9 pm.
“The business plan competition and class is an exciting new avenue to help jumpstart local businesses in Lee County, which are a key component to stimulating economic growth in our area,” said Alex Merk, Marketing Specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach in Lee County. “Even the entrepreneurs that do not win the competition will benefit from this process by receiving valuable feedback to improve their plans and make them more attractive to potential lenders.”
Information on the class and competition can either be downloaded at www.extension.iastate.edu/lee/bizplancompetition or picked up at the Lee County Extension office, 414 North Main Street in Donnellson. The deadline for submission is January 10, 2014.
The competition is sponsored by a partnership between ISU Extension and Outreach in Lee County and Iowa Microloan, and is supported by a USDA Rural Business Opportunity Grant. The Fort Madison Area Chamber of Commerce and the Keokuk Area Chamber of Commerce are also supporting the competition by providing a one-year membership to the chamber of the winner’s choice.
