Keokuk County Extension is partnering with Alliant Energy to provide the Operation Releaf program in Keokuk County. Alliant Energy customers may order up to 2 trees per household through the program for $25.00 per tree. A limited number of trees are available. Trees must be picked up at the Keokuk County Expo grounds on May 23, 2013. For more information please contact the Keokuk County Extension Office at 641-622-2680. The last chance for farmers to attend private pesticide applicator training locally will be April 15, 2013,  at the Keokuk County Extension Office on the Expo grounds.  One session will be offered from 9:00 a.m. –11:30 a.m.  The cost of the training is $20.

4th – 6th grade 4-H’ers are invited to attend Region 15 4-H Jr. Camp June 17-21.  Junior members will bus together to the Iowa 4-H Center in Madrid for five days and four nights of camping adventures and fun!

The Keokuk Master Gardeners have published a Wild Flower book. There are 28 wild flowers in this book, with descriptions of the flowers, where to find them and when they will bloom. This book is a way to get youth interested in outdoor activities, horticulture and wild flowers. There is a scavenger hunt with scoring for finding the flowers in the book.

The Master Equine Manager Program is designed to provide applicable information to the horse owner on horse care and management.  The program consists of six 2-hour online internet sessions which include behavior, nutrition, pasture management, facilities, equipment, selection and evaluation, diseases, parasites and hoof care.

Practical Farmers of Iowa joins with Iowa Learning Farms to have farmers showcase their experiences with cover crops this spring at eight field days across Iowa. As reported by AgriSafe, there are several different types of respiratory hazards that can come from corn, soybeans, and confinement (i.e. poultry, hogs, cattle, etc.)  These hazards are related to the dust from the corn, soybeans, and confinement.  The dust can also contain things like mold, feces, bacteria, etc. that can get into your lungs and make you sick or damage your lungs.

When temperatures plunge into the single digits and the winds howl, people pile on the outerwear and look for warm food and beverages to help ease the chill. Chris Clark, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach beef program specialist, said it’s important to remember that although Iowa cattle typically can tolerate winter conditions surprisingly well, colder temperatures can mean higher nutrition needs for cow herds.
