Training for New Volunteers including 4-H & Clover Kid leaders & volunteers
County based volunteer orientation and training is crucial to volunteers being successful in their “home” counties. Each county has some unique aspects of the 4-H program that volunteers need to learn about. County Extension staff, Youth Committee members, experienced volunteers, and the regional youth program specialist form the county team who are the essential frontline trainers and mentors for new volunteers. This county based team builds the relationships and support systems which will make volunteers successful.
Regional new volunteer training is designed for new 4-H volunteers committing to a long term experience working with 4-H youth as club, project, Clover Kids – both leaders and assistants. Volunteers committing to these roles are required to attend a regional new volunteer training within the first 12 months of being screened and approved as a 4-H volunteer.
The 6 hour training is designed to give new volunteers a better working knowledge of positive youth development, the Iowa 4-H Equation, and tools that will help them be more confident and capable in their roles working with youth. The training includes breakout sessions for Clover Kid volunteers and club/project volunteers. Volunteers who attend receive a notebook of positive youth development resources and information. AmeriCorps members are welcome to attend!
Scheduled trainings are listed below. Pre-registration is preferred. Link to registration form HERE. Please contact Monica Gray at 319-465-3224 with any questions.

4-H Dog Obedience Clinics
Jones County 4-H and FFA members enrolled in the Dog Project are welcome to attend Linn County 4-H & FFA Dog Project training Classes because we do not have any Dog Project Clinics scheduled in Jones County.
These classes are held on Tuesday’s starting April 21st at the Linn County Fairgrounds, 201 Central City Road, Central City, IA 52214.
These classes are taught as if they were an 8 week dog training class. It is not easy to do a drop in, or just a couple of classes in the middle of the schedule. Members need to be able to hop into the current night’s lesson. So if they have no training or haven’t shown before, they should really be in attendance for the first nights class. Members are allowed to come any night, instructors just can’t do much backtracking in the training as it will take away from those that have been there at each class, putting in the work.
Members must provide a copy of their dog’s current up to date vaccinations upon arrival. Parents need to stay for the class. Proper equipment is also necessary. Proper equipment includes – 6’ leather or nylon leash, no snap collars, must be a flat buckle or training collar. No chains, flexi leashes, slip leashes. Yes, you can have a prong collar but must know how to use it properly.
Linn County 4-H & FFA Dog Project Training Classes are scheduled on Tuesday’s at 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM beginning 4-21-15. Registration is not required but we would like to let Linn County know how many Jones County youth to expect, so please call the Jones County Extension office at 319-465-3224 if you plan to attend so that we can let Linn County know.
