Johnson County Master Gardeners

The Johnson County Master Gardener program is a volunteer organization coordinated by the Johnson County Extension and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.  Master Gardeners are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens.  They are enthusiastic, willing to learn, help others and able to communicate with diverse groups of people.

Presently, Johnson County has over 100 active members who support a number of projects.

Master Gardener training is offered in Johnson and Iowa County in the fall of each year as a joint venture.   Applications are taken in  August for a limited number of participants in the program. Currently, the cost is $150 per person. 

Classes are held at the Johnson County Extension & Outreach Office. The program has about 14 sessions mostly on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-9:30 p.m. starting the 2nd week of September and lasting until the 1st week of November. 

There is one all-day session held on campus at Iowa State University in Ames on pathology and entomology.  The core value of the program is the volunteer component that participants are expected to complete in the year following the training.
