People’s Garden at Mark Twain Elementary

People’s Garden at Mark Twain Elementary

The People’s Garden is a partnership between 4-H and the Master Gardeners at Johnson County/Iowa State University Extension, the Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County, Habitat for Humanity and the Mark Twain Elementary School staff and students.

With “hands on” leadership by the Master Gardeners and staff from the Neighborhood Center, youth in the afterschool  program at Mark Twain Elementary School learned about gardening, prepared the soil, and planted  the five raised beds.  Through the summer and fall, youth will care for and harvest the vegetables.  The AmeriCorps staff from Habitat for Humanity built the raised garden beds.

The goal of the USDA People’s Garden grant is to increase fruit and vegetable consumption, empower youth in their communities, and contribute to a sustainable environment and food system.
