Butterfly House at the Johnson County Fair

Butterfly House at the Johnson County Fair

We want to thank all the Master Gardeners and others who helped at the Butterfly House during the Johnson County Fair. We hope you had a good time while sharing what you learned with the fairgoers.   There was a lot for  visitors to see with the Monarchs laying eggs on milkweed leaves and a display of live monarch chrysalis in various life stages.   We were fortunate to not only have Monarchs but Black & Yellow Swallowtails, Julia (Dryas Iulia), Buckeyes, White Peacock, and Zebra Longwing butterflies.   On Tuesday we had a special treat when Kathleen Ziemer, ButterfliZ of Iowa came with her Madagascar Moths and Thursday evening a Monarch Release was held.  The Butterfly Garden and Monarch Release is a very popular event at the fair.  Sponsors include the Johnson County Fair Committee, Forever Green Nursery, and Johnson County Master Gardeners.   Submitted Carolyn Murphy, MG
