Johnson County Master Gardeners are able to volunteer their service to various Johnson County projects including Plum Grove. Plum Grove was built in 1844 by Robert Lucas, first governor of the Iowa Territory, and his wife, Friendly Lucas. The house contains seven rooms and has since been restored availabe to the viewing public for free each year from Memorial Day weekend through October. Johnson County Master Gardeners maintain Friendly's Kitchen Garden and Flower Garden by researching and planting with pre-1850 seeds creating a representative garden of heirloom vegetables and flowers that Friendly herself would have planted 150 years ago!
