Helping young athletes make smart nutrition practices is the focus of a program from Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach for coaches, teachers, and athletic directors. “Parents depend on teachers and coaches to give their players accurate information about training diets, supplements, and fluids,” said Jody Gatewood, ISU Extension Assistant State Nutrition Specialist. “These sessions are designed to help coaches and others know what kind of advice they can offer.”

        This winter, the crown temperatures have likely not been cold enough for direct cold injury, even without snow cover. While day temperatures have been warmer than normal for short periods through February and early March, night temperatures have, hopefully, been cold enough to prevent the plants from breaking dormancy. A significant concern are the localized, frozen, ponded areas. How well did they handle this winter? It is time to go find out.

Iowa Biomass Crop Workshop March 19 in Iowa City

IOWA CITY, Iowa ― A Biomass Crop Production Workshop will look at reasons for increased interest in biomass crops for energy in Iowa. The workshop will be held Tuesday, March 19, at the Johnson County Extension Office, Iowa City, Iowa. Registration opens at 8 a.m., with the program beginning at 8:45 a.m. and concluding at 1 p.m.

2013 Iowa Farm Custom Rate Survey Follows Recent Trend

AMES, Iowa ― The 2013 Iowa Farm Custom Rate Survey followed the recent trend of small, but consistent increases in rates each year. According to William Edwards, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach economist, most operations showed increases of three to five percent over the average rates in the 2012 survey.

4-H Club RISK Management Resources - for Leaders

Effective 4-H Clubs are Active 4-H groups. We want clubs to engage in a variety of activities and events. That's what makes 4-H fun, educational, and keeps youth excited about 4-H. We simply need to plan and conduct those activities in a safe manner. We need to ensure that risks to the 4-H program and the county extension districtsare minimized and properly managed. Most importantly, we need to ensure that our most critical assets - our 4-H members - are protected.
