Sports Buddies is seeking
male volunteers ages 18-70+ who like sports and have as little as 4
hours a month to share. You'll be introduced to a kid who wants a
chance to do sports-related activities and events with a caring adult.
This is your chance to do something great for your community AND the
best excuse ever to goof around shooting baskets or watching a game!
Big Brothers Big Sisters will provide discounts on sports equipment,
activities, and events and opportunities for large-group/team sports.
We want all
boys in our community to have a friend they can count on and the chance
to get active and involved. We'll match you with a child who's a good
fit for your interests, personality, and availability.
If you are
interested in becoming a sports buddy please contact Julie
Phanthavong with your name, address, and phone number julie@bbbsjc.org
This program
is made possible with support from the following businesses: Iowa City
Press-Citizen, KXIC 800 AM, Pleasant Valley Golf Course, Oral B,
Community Foundation of Johnson County, Buffalo Wild Wings, Play it
Again Sports, and Diamond Dreams Baseball and Softball Academy.
Community
based mentoring
is the
cornerstone of Big Brothers Big Sisters.
A child age 6-18 (Little) is matched with an adult between the ages of
18 and 80+ (Big) for a minimum of one year. All volunteers are
screened,
trained and supervised by professional staff. Volunteers meet with
their Little on a regular weekly to bi-weekly basis, doing fun
activities of their choice. A professional staff member is assigned to
the match to answer questions, provide assistance, and keep the match
informed of community and agency activities.

School
Buddies is a
relationship-focused program. Volunteers (between the ages of 16 and
80+) meet for an hour each week with an elementary aged child for a
commitment of one academic year. School Buddies is a
collaboration between the Iowa
City Community School District, Big Brothers Big Sisters, businesses
and agencies in the Iowa City/Coralville area. Volunteers visit
with the same child, same time and same day each week during school
hours within the confines of the school building. The volunteer
and child will be free to choose (with
help from the child's teacher) their activity for the time they are
together. Activities may include playing board games, reading, eating
lunch, working on academic work or just hanging out and talking.
Matches are made in the months of September and early October and
last throughout the school year. The
School Buddies program is up and running in 10 area schools.
The purpose of
the
School
Buddies program is to provide a friend to a
child's life who may need a little extra help and guidance from a
volunteer mentor. All mentors go through a screening process similar to
the Community Based Program as well as a Training and Orientation
session. For more information on the School Buddies program, call
or email:
The School Buddies Program is no longer accepting volunteers for fall
2009.

Academic
Mentoring Program involves a stronger academic
component than either of the above programs, along with the option to
do community activities with a child. This program is a
collaboration
between the Iowa City Community School District, Big Brothers Big
Sisters and United Action for Youth (UAY). For more
