Community based mentoring is the cornerstone of Big Brothers Big Sisters. A child age 6-18 (Little) is matched with an adult between the ages of 18 and 80+ (Big) for a minimum of one year. All volunteers are screened, trained and supervised by professional staff. Volunteers meet with their Little on a regular weekly to bi-weekly basis, doing fun activities of their choice. A professional staff member is assigned to the match to answer questions, provide assistance, and keep the match informed of community and agency activities.

School Buddies is a relationship-focused program. Volunteers meet for an hour each week (same day, same time) with the same child for the school year at the child's school. School Buddies is a
collaboration between the Iowa City Community School District, Big Brothers Big Sisters, businesses and agencies in the Iowa City/Coralville area.  The volunteer and child meet once a week during the school day at a designated location within the school. The volunteer and child will be free to choose (with help from the child's teacher) their activity for the time they are together. Activities may include playing board games, reading, eating lunch, working on academic work or just hanging out and talking. Matches are ideally made in the months of September and October and last throughout the school year. The School Buddies program is up and running in 10 area schools.

The purpose of the School Buddies program is to provide a friend to a child's life who may need a little extra help and guidance from a volunteer mentor. All mentors go through a screening process similar to the Community Based Program as well as a Training and Orientation session. For more information on the School Buddies program, call or email:

School Buddies is currently full for the 2007-2008 school year.  If you are interested in volunteering starting Fall 2008, email Lori Swartzendruber at

Academic Mentoring Program involves a stronger academic component than either of the above programs, along with the option to do community activities with a child.  This program is a collaboration between the Iowa City Community School District, Big Brothers Big Sisters and United Action for Youth (UAY).
