Safety Education in Shooting Sports (SESS) is a great opportunity for youth in grades 4-12 to have fun learning how to respect and appreciate the discipline of shooting sports. Youth do not have to be currently in 4-H to join. Shooting Sports is currently one of the fastest growing programs in 4-H.
Jackson County offers three basic disciplines including achery, rifle, and shotgun. Youth must be at least 11 years old to participate in shotgun. All are designed as a learn-by doing model with great emphasis placed on safety and the proper handling of fire-arms. The objectives of the program are:
- to enhance the physical, cognitive, social and emotiuonal development of youth through safe, educational, and socially acceptable involvement in a shooting related activity.
- to teach safe and reponsible use of firearms and archery equipment including sound decision-making, self-discipline, and concentration.
- to promote the highest standards of safety, sportsmanship, and eithical behavior.
- to encourage understanding o four natural resources and the development of a personal environmental tewardship eithic by young people through participation in shooting, hunting, and related activites.
- to strengthen families throgh life-long recreational activities
- to expose participants to the broad array of vacational activtes related tot he shooting sports.
- To complement and enhance the impact of existing safety and hunter education programs.
