IT Services

There are several areas of IT service to consider, including wide area network (WAN) connectivity, local area network (LAN) connectivity, network equipment and support, virtual private networking service, computer support, printer support, file sharing and others.

Wide area network (WAN) connectivity.
  • Regional director office with T1: Paid centrally.
  • County office with T1: Paid by the County office. Current rates are $450 or $520 per month depending on location.
  • County office with local Internet Service Provider (ISP): Paid by the County office directly to the provider. Expected rates in the $75/month range for business class service with static IP address.
Local area network (LAN) connectivity.
  • Ethernet wiring throughout the office space including wall jacks and wiring closet distribution panel will continue to be the responsibility of each office and/or its landlord.
Network equipment and support.
  • Regional director office with T1: Paid centrally.
  • County office with T1: County office pays $75 per month to Extension IT to provide and maintain all equipment.
  • County office with local Internet Service Provider (ISP) and virtual private network (VPN): County office obtains DSL or cable modem from ISP and pays $75 per month to Extension IT to provide and maintain all other routing, switching and wireless equipment.
  • County office with local Internet Service Provider and NO Extension IT contracted service: County office responsible for all equipment.
Virtual private networking (VPN) service.
  • VPN service is not needed for offices using private T1 connections.
  • County offices with local ISPs will generally want to contract with Extension IT for network equipment, support and VPN service. The $75 per month fee covers local routing, switching and wireless equipment as well as VPN connectivity over the provider network to the ISU campus.
Computer support.

  • EIT will continue to provide no-cost phone support through the Extension IT Support Hotline (515.294.1725). Be aware that our ability to effectively support you may depend on your having a connection to ISU either via T1 or VPN. In particular, T1 or VPN is required for us to use Remote Assistance.
  • EIT will continue to offer fee-based computer setup or repair service in Ames at the current $100/incident rate.

Printer support.

  • Regional and County offices with T1 or local ISP+VPN connectivity will continue to receive network printer support in the same manner they do today.
  • County offices using local Internet Service Providers and choosing not to contract with Extension IT for network equipment and support will also be responsible for their own network printing.
File sharing.

  • Regional director offices will be provided a local file server in their office, paid centrally.
  • County offices using T1 or local ISP+VPN connectivity may continue to use free campus-based file sharing, or may optionally contract with Extension IT for a local file server in their office at a current rate of $100 per month.
  • County offices using local Internet Service Providers and choosing not to contract with Extension IT for VPN service will be responsible for meeting their own file sharing needs.
