Lost Landscape Film Project - $16,200 Backyard
Safari - $12,227 E Resources Group will pilot and introduce families to "Backyard Safari", a backyard environmental education & outdoor skills program for families with young children. The final session will be an overnight camping experience at a nearby natural resource, county or state park. This program will be a cooperative effort of E Resources Group, Linn County Conservation Board and Johnston Community Education. Business
Behind the Scenes - $5,998 The focus of "Business Behind the Scenes" is to train 80 business teachers to use games/lessons that help students learn about decision-making, pollution prevention, environmental regulations and environmental health. Collaboration
and Dissemination Initiative - $32,456 The Center for Energy And Environmental Education at UNI will invite environmental education (EE) providers to join the "Collaboration and Dissemination Initiative" working group. The group will disseminate information about EE programs and services to never-before-reached educators, as well as reinforce the benefits of EE to teachers already educating about conservation issues.
The mission of this grant is to create an alliance/partnership among Environmental Education facilities in Central Iowa and educate our constituents on the quality and variety of Environmental Education available. The phases of this grant include developing a "Central Iowa Outdoor Education Resource Guide", conducting teacher in-services, teacher workshops and placing information on the web at www.conservationboard.org. Moines Urban Prairie Project - $20,310 This project involves the cooperation of many different organizations to create functional prairie plantings in city parks, schools, and other public institutions within the city of Des Moines and to teach the public through an educational campaign using these plantings. The goal will be to create living classrooms in an urban setting that will reach a currently under-served population. Environmental
Education in Northeast Iowa - $14,260 This environmental education proposal is designed to educate the farm and non-farm Iowa residents about the natural resource water and what they can do to protect it. We are constructing six water quality educational displays. A miniature working model of a septic tank and a ground water contamination model will compliment these displays. Six water quality presentations will be given. Twenty County Extension Education Directors will conduct at least two educational meetings per county. A LIFE in IOWA student will be hired to conduct at least 8 summer youth environmental day camps in the summer of 2004. Environmental
Education Service Learning Workshops - $18,821 ICEC will develop, market and pilot a service learning series that includes minigrants for student-generated service learning projects within their community; a one-day, two-day, and extended service-learning workshop opportunities for formal and nonformal educators. The project will conclude with an evaluation of the process and also measure student and educator outcomes.
Indian Creek Nature Center is extending environmental education to home schooled children with three series of programs for students of different grade levels. Each program includes hands-on study of a topic and field experience. Students learn about basic principles of ecology and biology, interrelationships of Iowa flora and fauna, and human impact on the environment. Sessions include social interaction, take home materials, and a parent outline. Environmental
Performance Tools for Agriculture - $20,000 The Iowa Soybean Association is implementing a project to train a group of farmers in the use of existing resource assessment and analytical tools. ISA intends to evaluate tools and training for applicability to integrate programming into other ISA environmental programming. ISA is partnering with the Soil Quality Institute at the National Soil Tilth Laboratory and the IOWATER program through the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Extension
21 Food, Fiber, Environmental Science Program - $25,925 REAP funding will be used to enhance the existing Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development Food, Fiber, and Environmental Science program. Banana Slug String Band performances, four agricultural issue papers, and design and printing costs for the sixth grade "Where We Live" curriculum are components of the grant. Food,
Land & People Workshops - $37,389 The purpose is for the Iowa State University Extension 4-H, in cooperation with the AEAs, commodity and other groups to provide 12 workshops for Iowa educators. The impact will include increasing student understanding of food and fiber production, environmental impacts upon the land, and cultural needs of people from diverse backgrounds. This project will extend the learning of FLP to future teachers as well as enhance agricultural and natural resource education efforts of ISU Extension to urban as well as rural audiences. Iowa
NatureMapping - $21,990 Iowa NatureMapping will offer "traveling workshops" to various areas in Iowa to learn about and monitor wildlife species that are significantly important to Iowa. Trained NatureMappers, especially teachers, will be the targeted audience. Iowa's
Neotropical Migratory Birds - $49,500 This proposal addresses REAP priorities . . . for professional development utilizing weekend workshops, classroom/field applications, and reflective/evaluative update meetings in 2004-05. Materials developed with previous REAP funding will be utilized in the environmental theme topic: Iowa's Neotropical Migratory Birds. Teacher partnerships with naturalists . . . will leverage involvement of parents and communities to take responsible citizen action . . ." Iowa
Project WET - $27,648 The Iowa Academy of Science will prepare 650 Iowa preservice teachers to teach about Iowa's water resources and issues by providing training in Project WET (Water Education for Teachers). Preservice teachers will take part in activities developed with sound environmental education methods. Marshall
County 4-H Junior Conservationist Program - $9,925 The Marshall County 4H Junior Conservationist program will provide an opportunity for K-8 students to receive education in environmental stewardship, conservation techniques, scientific and technological skills, as well as various life skills. The program will take place during after-school and in the summer. It will be provided by staff and volunteers from ISU Extension-Marshall County, the Marshall County Conservation Board and the county school districts who will be receiving training through the REAP funding.
The Park Pack program promotes broad community environmental education by transforming Polk County Parks into outdoor classrooms. Park Packs are backpacks filled with nature activities, materials and children's literature all designed for hands-on field investigations. This project will create ten environmental discovery units designed to encourage parent/adult and child interaction in the outdoors. REAP
The Benefits - $30,676 ICEC's goal is to promote the outstanding projects funded by REAP/CEP and develop a system to review, monitor, and promote successful projects. The intended outcome is to see an increased awareness of REAP/CEP projects as well as an expansion of successful project implementation throughout Iowa. Self
Guided Interpretive Trail - $28,268 A
web based software program is being developed to provide self guided
interpretive trail information. Kiosks for sites will be based within
the seven counties in the Loess Hills. The library of species will
allow trail interpretation to change in order to provide visitors
with new experiences.
Teacher Training and Wildlife Equipment Checkout - $16,220 NatureMapping is piloting a teacher in-service and curriculum roundtable in Level I NatureMapping, GPS, and curricular issues. Traps are being purchased to use with the Traveling Workshops and will be made available for checkout by teachers wanting to take their monitoring efforts to another level. Toddling
on the Wild Side - Phase 1 - $7,605 "Toddling on the Wild Side" is creating an awareness and training for parents and caregivers of one to two year old children. This series of eight programs will provide the tools and enable adults to explore the natural world with their young child. This model will be made available on the web and have transferability to other educational programs across Iowa. Toddling
on the Wild Side - Phase 2 - $15,090 "Toddling on the Wild Side" is creating an awareness and training for parents and caregivers of one and two year old children. This winter and spring series of eight programs is being offered twice and will provide the tools and enable adults to explore the natural world with their young child. Reduction: Addressing the Overlooked 'R' - $16,377 "Waste Reduction: Addressing the Overlooked 'R'" will train middle school educators from many disciplines about waste reduction, as well as adapt some existing lesson plans and course requirements to address new state and federal legislation.
Wildlife Rescue/Rehabilitation Training - $14,800 The Iowa Wildlife Rehabilitators Association, the IDNR, the REAP-CEP, and Woodbury, Wapello, and Montgomery County Conservation Boards will sponsor five regional Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Workshops throughout the state for students, naturalists, conservation officers, humane society personnel, wildlife rehabilitators and others. The topics include: how to answer calls from the public about injured wildlife, rules and regulations, wildlife rescue, handling and transportation techniques, wildlife diseases, zoonoses, appropriate initial care for injured or diseased wildlife, and more.
Winter Solstice 2004 - $14,955 Changing Landscapes and Lifestyles - Past to Present, is the Iowa Conservation Education Council's theme for Winter Solstice 2004. The statewide EE workshop was held January 16-18, 2004 at the Conservation Education Center near Guthrie Center. This year we blended social studies and environmental education. |
