On June 22nd, 2013 nearly 20 people met at Brent Potter’s farm near Griswold, IA for a tour and an evening meal as part of the Southwest Iowa Cow/Calf group meeting. The Southwest Iowa Cow/Calf group is part of a state-wide initiative called the Beginning and Young Livestock Producer Success Network. The program is aimed at establishing peer groups of young livestock producers across the state that can gather together to gain three valuable experiences: education, socialization/networking, and mentorship. The June meeting included a tour of Brent Potter’s livestock facilities and a quick visit to a nearby pasture to view some of Potter’s cattle. Potter guided the tour, gave a thorough description of the operation, and fielded questions from the group. Following the tour, the group met in Potter’s garage for a potluck meal which offered a nice opportunity to socialize and network with one another.
This was the second meeting for the Southwest Iowa Cow/Calf group which met for the first time in February at the Anita Veterinary Clinic to discuss bull selection. The group plans to meet three to four times a year and any beginning or young cattle producers are welcome to attend.
