Iowa County 4-H Hosts Final Clover Kid Workshop

Iowa County 4-H Hosts Final Clover Kid Workshop

The Iowa County Extension Office hosted their third and final Clover Kid workshop on Wednesday, April 30 for Iowa County Kindergarten - third grade students. The students enjoyed “getting their hands dirty” while learning about gardening, springtime fun and nature.

All of the activities and lessons youth participated in centered around gardening and seeds. Activities included learning about the needs of plants and seeds and their similarities to our own, how seeds travel and germinate, especially with help by animals like birds, and how root systems work that was demonstrated by string, water and food coloring. They were even able to make their own “Soil Sam” that will grow grass seed from its head in a few weeks. Each youth was engaged in hands-on learning for the two hour workshop that took place on an early dismissal day.

Older 4-H’ers showed leadership and modeled generosity by helping our Clover Kid friends through each activity. The 4-H’ers that helped were:, Elizabeth Jones, member of Troy York Hawkeyes 4-H Club, Dana Sickles, member of Pilot 4-H Club, and Erica Wardenburg, member of Troy York Hawkeyes 4-H Club.

Clover Kids is a program offered through Iowa State University Extension and 4-H. It is a great way to meet new friends, discover cool things, and learn what 4-H is all about. They play games, experiment, craft and explore in non-competitive ways. All the activities are hands-on and age appropriate. This workshop was the final in a series of three workshops hosted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach during the second half of the school year. Iowa County 4-H strives to offer research based, hands on and educational programming to youth. This workshop series was a first year program to gauge interest in programming for K-3 youth. Currently, we are seeking volunteers to work with staff to start a Clover Kids group in the Williamsburg area. For more information on how to get involved as a participant or volunteer, contact Tricia.
