John and Margaret Hogan began using contour strips and buffer strips six years ago as a way to conserve soil and moisture on their farm near Earlville in Delaware County. The sandy soil on their farm makes these conservation practices essential. They grow row crops, hay and also have a cow-calf operation.
The Hogans have been farming for the past 45 years. They have six children who help on the farm: Tom, Greg, Regina, Emily, Bridget, and Johnny. In addition to farming, they are involved in their local church, Farm Bureau, and the Dairy Producers.
Margaret also teaches middles school science at Beckman Catholic high school in Dyersville.
Building a Culture of Conservation: “We must conserve our natural resources because they are only on loan to us from our children.”
The Hogans hosted an outdoor classroom on their farm in the fall of 2011. The students heard from guest speakers, visited the farm and participated in a watershed exercise.
