Cover Crops field day on Nov. 14 in Stanton
Ames, Iowa—Iowa Learning Farms, along with Practical Farmers of Iowa, will host a cover crops field day on Thursday, Nov. 14, from 12-3 p.m. in Stanton. The event will focus on cover crops for livestock use and soil health as part of the Nutrient Reduction Strategy. The event is free and the public is invited to attend.
The field day begins at the Fire Station community room, located at 205 Broad Avenue in Stanton, for a noon meal. The program will begin at 12:45 p.m. After lunch, attendees will carpool to several locations with cover crops, including two sites screening 18 cover crops species. The tour will also make brief stops at a drilled cover crop site and an aerially seeded cover crop field. After returning to the Fire Station, local farmer Mark Peterson will share his experiences using cover crops for soil health, erosion reduction, and as a third crop. Colten Catterton, staff member with Green Cover Seed, will share information about cover crop forages and mixture choices for livestock use. Also Practical Farmers of Iowa Livestock Coordinator Margaret Dunn will have new cover crop and livestock handouts available.
