Stop in the Ida County Extension Office for application materials and information. In the meantime, here is a useful collection of information about ISU from the President:
Why Iowa State?
- We now have one of the very best colleges of agriculture in the nation, one of the top full-service colleges of engineering anywhere, and the oldest college of veterinary medicine in the country, with 80% of the veterinarians in Iowa as graduates of our program.
- We have great strengths in the physical, social and human sciences as well as in design.
- Our College of Business is now the third-largest in the university, and its programs are very popular with our students, because its graduates are in very high demand among employers.
- And we maintain an extension & outreach service that is nationally recognized as the very best in the nation.
Today, we serve 25,462 students on the Ames campus, with three-quarters of our undergraduates coming from Iowa. We enroll more Iowa high school graduates than any other university in the state, and we reach out to more than a half-million Iowans every year through the programs of Iowa State Extension.

We have also made very good progress on a number of important initiatives…
- We installed a new high-performance computer, one that is among the fastest at universities anywhere and one that will help keep our leadership in bioinformatics, computer science and engineering, and the many other fields that depend on high-powered computation. We have leveraged this advancement into an invitation to be part of one of only two university partnerships invited to compete for a $200 million National Science Foundation award to develop the world’s fastest computer.
- Two of our faculty are leading the national efforts to sequence the complete genomes of the pig and of corn, giving results which should be of very high impact for Iowa.
- Our plant breeders have developed new lines of soybeans that produce an oil that is completely free of trans-fat, giving Iowa farmers an important value-added soybean variety, just at the time of a nationwide move to decrease the amount of trans-fat in food.
- One of our scientists developed a new solder that contains no lead, which is now being used all over the world. It is licensed to Iowa companies, and its invention resulted in his being named Iowa’s Inventor of the Year.
- The U. S. Department of Energy recently renewed our $25 million yearly contract to manage the Ames Laboratory, illustrating the confidence of the federal government in Iowa State.
- We upgraded our Virtual Reality facilities to create the most realistic virtual reality environment anywhere in the world.
- We opened our new Student Success Center, a facility built entirely with private funds, that will house programs to enhance the graduation success of our students.
- We inaugurated two Admissions Partnership Programs with Iowa community colleges to smooth the transfer process for students who want to come to Iowa State after their community college experience.
- Our entrepreneurship programs were ranked among the top 25 in the nation.
- A few weeks ago, three of our College of Design programs were ranked in the top 15 in the nation.
- And, most importantly, we have been instrumental in putting Iowa on the map as the nation’s leader in renewable fuels. We now have at Iowa State the strongest concentration of faculty in the world working in biorenewables, an effort that spans the entire university. That is why we are attracting the attention of companies like BP, Conoco-Phillips and many others who want to partner with us and invest right here in Iowa in developing the future in renewable fuels.
