Summer Food Service Program Map Machine
To help target potential expansion efforts for USDA's Summer Food Service
Program (SFSP), ERS has developed the Summer Food Service Program Map
Machine. The interactive web machine combines data on 2001 SFSP sponsors and
sites, Census 2000 data on small geographic areas, and school census data.
Users can create maps that allow them to infer at a glance whether SFSP
sites are located in areas of the highest need, and whether some qualified
areas have been overlooked. The Map Machine also allows for indepth analysis
of program coverage using the underlying data from the three databases. Access the Map Machine, below:
Child and Adult Care Food Programs
(FairData and FRAC, August 2003) In conjunction with FRAC, the Fair Data
2000 project has developed a resource center for mapping Census 2000 data
for the Summer Food Service Program and the Child and Adult Care Food
Program. This interactive mapping center was developed for local groups who
need highly detailed
(street-level) census information and lack access to desktop mapping
software. The maps can be used to identify neighborhoods and communities
needing these nutrition programs. Sets of data relevant to both programs can
be mapped at the block group level at the link below. In addition, color
maps for many metropolitan areas can be downloaded as PDF files and printed
as 11x17 inch maps, or downloaded in a larger format for printing wall maps.
Community Nutrition Mapping Project
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's chief scientific
research agency (ARS) has developed a resource called the Community
Nutrition Mapping Project (CNMap). Easy-to-read tables and color-coded
customized maps help states gauge whether a community is at risk for food
insecurity or other nutritional problems. It includes information on
nutrient intakes, physical activity and body weight, healthy eating patterns
and food security. The Community Nutrition Mapping Project CNMap combines
1994-96 CSFII data with GIS software to provide a picture of food and
nutrition at the region and state level. To further develop the map and
provide specific community-level data, CNRG plans to conduct small studies
in several communities and map the results. Access the Community
Nutrition Mapping Project (CNMap).
