Extension Welcomes New Addition to Family Finance Team

Suzanne BartholomaeAMES, Iowa – Suzanne Bartholomae is the newest addition to the family finance team at Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. The new ISU Extension specialist is part of the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Iowa State, and will take over Pat Swanson’s responsibilities upon her retirement in December.

Bartholomae has an interesting background. She received her bachelor’s degree in business administration and marketing, and used it for a position with editorial market research for PC Week in Boston.

“I enjoyed researching, but I wanted more than a consumer marketing perspective,” Bartholomae said. “I went on to get my master’s degree in family and child sciences because I wanted to concentrate more on family and consumer research.”

After receiving her master’s degree, Bartholomae went on to Ohio State to get her doctorate in human development and family sciences. As an extension specialist for Iowa State, she will focus on supporting regional specialists, supporting program delivery and expanding program evaluations, especially for Money Talk, an ISU Extension and Outreach program geared to educate women on financial issues.

“Through this position, I hope to help people improve financial security and financial decision making abilities,” Bartholomae. “The role of the family finance program is to help make people better finance managers, and I’m ready to help with that.”

A Fond Farewell

Patricia Swanson began working for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, and the university, in 1994. She has held various positions during her time here as an extension program specialist, adjunct assistant professor, temporary assistant professor and lecturer. She has contributed much to the Extension Families team in her time at Iowa State.

“I am very excited to welcome Suzanne to the Extension to Families team,” Swanson said. “She brings a strong educational and experiential background to her new position. As I prepare for retirement, I have been reflecting on my years in delivering family finance programming. I will miss my interaction with the Extension to Families team. They are a dedicated group of professionals.”
