Christina Hixson Opportunity Award Presented to Howard County Senior Jesse Vorwald

The 2013 Christina Hixson Opportunity Award at Iowa State University was presented to Jesse Vorwald at the Crestwood Awards night.  The Hixson Opportunity award is a half-tuition grant with an estimated value of more than $15,000 over eight semesters.  Recipients represent nearly every county in the state for this award.  The Hixson Award program focuses on students who demonstrate the desire and potential to succeed, but come from challenging personal environments or have high financial need.  The award is named for Christina Hixson, a native of Clarinda Iowa and the sole trustee of the Lied Foundation Trust in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Through her financial leadership, she has been recognized as an outstanding philanthropist, known especially for the generous financial support she has directed to charitable institutions in the Midwest and southern Nevada.  Since 1995, more than 1000 Hixson scholars have graduated from Iowa State University.  Hixson Award student retention and graduation rates, as well as grade point averages, are consistently higher than university and national averages.
