This presentation examined the special challenges we face as we go about the business of educating children and youth in today's socially toxic environment. It focused on the concept of "childhood protection" as the antidote for social toxicity. Contributors to the toxicity of the social environment include instability of relationships, economic polarization, desensitization to violence, "the spiritual crisis," and the nastiness of popular culture. Of special concern is that the effects of this social toxicity are felt and expressed most by the most vulnerable children and youth -- e.g. those from destabilized families, those subject to racism, and those with disabilities.

Efforts to deal with the issues of social toxicity involve both strengthening children and youth to decrease their vulnerability and simultaneously detoxifying the social environment. The presentation was based upon J. Garbarino's books Raising Children in a Socially Toxic Environment (San Francisco: Jossey-Bass Publishers, 1995 and Lost Boys: Why Our Sons Turn Violent and How We Can Save Them. NY: The Free Press, May 1999).

Dr. Garbarino currently holds the Maude C. Clark Chair in Humanistic Psychology at Loyola University of Chicago. He has authored nearly two dozen books on bullying, parenting, and violence prevention. His most recent book, See Jane Hit, has received much praise and publicity for its brave discussion of female violence. Additionally, Dr. Garbarino serves as a consultant to television, magazine, and newspaper reports on children and families. His numerous awards recognize his efforts on behalf of abused and neglected children.
