Heel raises & beanbag balancing

Whether you have children of your own, grandchildren, or no children at all, the following activities are a lot of fun to do indoors. They can be done while watching TV or talking on the telephone too. If you have children, these ideas are a great way to encourage physical activity. Plus toddlers and preschoolers will love to try these balancing acts!

Heel Raises – helps with balance and builds calf muscles

  • While facing your child and holding their hands, slowly lift your heals onto your tiptoes.
  • Count to five aloud and then rest your heels on the ground and repeat.
  • Encourage your child to follow what you are doing.
  • Try changing speeds, raising your heals fast and slow.
  • To make it more fun, you can hop in place too…using both feet or just one!

Beanbag Balancing – helps with balance and coordination

  • Place a beanbag or small, soft toy on top of your child's head.
  • Encourage them to walk towards you without dropping the beanbag.
  • They can also walk fast, or walk backwards and sideways to make it more of a challenge.
  • Then it is your turn!
