Updated Beef Ration Software Now Available

AMES, Iowa - The BRANDS (Beef Ration and Nutrition Decisions Software) software packages have been updated to make them even better for producers and nutritionists. These interactive spreadsheets for Microsoft® Excel from the Iowa Beef Center (IBC) assists producers in balancing rations for their different types of cattle and helps them better used home-raised feeds.

"After releasing the first versions of BRANDS, we received several good ideas on how to make it better, and we took those suggestions seriously," said Daryl Strohbehn from the IBC and professor of Animal Science at Iowa State University. "We're very pleased with these enhancements for BRANDS," Strohbehn continues. "They make BRANDS more flexible to use and makes the chore of balancing rations even easier."

BRANDS comes in five modules specific a the producer's operation and includes three Standard Edition modules: Beef Cow and Heifer Module, Growing and Breeding Bulls Module, and Feedlot Module. The remaining two modules include a BRANDS set, which includes all three standard edition modules and BRANDS Professional Edition.

"The BRANDS Professional Edition is a powerful program geared toward the serious minded nutritionist who consults with many clients," said Garland Dahlke, IBC program specialist. "Professional BRANDS has many unique features like multiple feed library storages, balancing for wide ranges in weights and production phases, projecting entire feeding periods and custom supplement developments."

The Iowa Beef Center began operation in 1996 to support the growth and vitality of the beef cattle industry of the state.
