TERMS TO KNOW:

Severe Thunderstorm Watch:  This is issued when severe thunderstorms are possible in and close to the watch area.  This is issued to just to alert you to the possibility that thunderstorms with damaging winds and large hail may develop.  So, you need to keep a close eye on the weather stations during these watches.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning:  This is issued when a severe thunderstorm has been spotted and is going to move through your county soon.  At this time you need to take precautionary action to protect yourself, your family and your property.

Having disaster supplies on hand is a great idea.  Flashlights, batteries, battery operated radio, first-aid kit, emergency food and water, essential medicines, checkbook, cash, credit cards, and ATM cards should all be readily available to you.

Remember if you can hear thunder you are close enough to the storm that you could be struck by lightening.

Avoid using home based telephones or any electrical appliances during a storm.  Make sure you are in a sturdy building.  Do not take shelter in a small shed or  under isolated trees.  If lightening is occuring and shelter is not available, get inside a hard top automobile and keep the windows up.

After the storm has passed, continue to keep an eye on the weather.  Storms can pop up quickly and technology has taken great steps in keeping us informed.

Be safe and have a great spring and summer!
