Barn Quilts of Grundy County

The mission of the Barn Quilts of Grundy County is to promote and celebrate the unique agricultural experience of Grundy County through the visual combination of barns, which were vital to the economic well-being of the rural community, and the comfort of handmade quilts that provided warmth, beauty and an outlet for individual artistic expression.

Citizens of Grundy County selected 20 quilt blocks out of a field of 50 choices, thus providing them with a sense of ownership in the project.  The barn owners then were the final judges on which quilt block would adorn their structure.  Local quilters assisted the barn owners by researching and documenting historical information and provide color and design input regarding the quilt blocks.  Local artiisans were then commissioned to transform the blocks from paper disign to reality.  Sizes of blocks range in size from 8'x8' to 12'x12', depending on the size of the barn and the proximity to the road.

The Barn Quilts of Grundy County is a joint venture between Grundy County Extension and Grundy County Development Alliance that is designed to build community pride and increase economic development by enticing vistors to stop in the country and view quilt blocks that have been painted onto the sides of Grundy County Barns and other farm buildings.
