AMES, Iowa – A conversation between Chris Nelson, the Adams County director with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach at the time, and Joyce Lash, human sciences specialist in family finance, back in 2005 established a site forVolunteer Income Tax Assistance in Iowa.

tax form 1040VITA is an IRS sponsored program that certifies volunteers to prepare tax returns for low income taxpayers. This program makes sure the proper forms are filed so taxpayers receive the correct refund and tax credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit. Returns are filed electronically and refunds are received within 10 days of return acceptance.
