Upcoming Workshops for Child Care Providers, Teachers, Parents

Two upcoming workshops related to raising and teaching children are being sponsored by Greene County Extension for child care providers, teachers, as well as parents. One workshop will focus on building quality relationships with children, while the other will help participants learn the importance of modeling healthy behaviors for kids. Each workshop is eligible for two hours of licensing credits for child care providers.

The workshop “Building Relationships with Children that Challenge Us” will be held on Thursday, November 1, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Greene County Extension office. The workshop will help participants take an honest look at their feelings about children and explore how to build positive relationships with all children, particularly those who might be more challenging. Registration for this workshop is due by October 31.

Another workshop, scheduled for Tuesday, November 20, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., is titled “Actions Speak Louder than Words,” where participants will find out how infants, toddlers, preschool, and school-age children all “learn” nutrition, physical activity, and other healthy behaviors by observing and imitating adults. The session will include a time to experience less than ideal role modeling, hear and see parents’ opinions of role modeling, and develop an action plan to foster more positive role modeling to help children engage in health-promoting behaviors and practices. Registration is due by November 19 for this workshop.

“These are two important topics for anybody who works with children,” said Michael Cooley, county Extension coordinator for Greene County Extension. “We’re thrilled to offer local courses to enhance our county’s child care services, as well as classrooms and families.”

Registration for each session is only $10, which will be used to off-set direct expenses and to support the Families County Extension Program. To register, contact the Greene County Extension office at 515-386-2138 or email cleanne@iastate.edu.
