Back to school transitions can both be exciting and a bit scary for children - and their parents - whether they're preparing for the first day of preschool, moving to a new school or entering middle school. However, there are several thigs parents can do to help ease these fears,a ccording to Dr. David Brown, a human sciences specialist with iowa State university Extension and Outreach and a licensed marriage and family therapist. Greene County 4-H members, families, and volunteers are invited to a countywide Greene County 4-H picnic at Spring Lake, to be held Saturday, August 29, beginning with activities at 6:00pm and the meal starting at 6:30pm.  Also invited are youth and families interested in joining or learning more about 4-H.  The event is being organized by the Greene County 4-H Youth Development Committee to celebrate the new 4-H year through food and fun.  Attendees will get the chance to participate in activities such as a scavenger hunt, yard games, kickball, art, and skating. Skating will be avaible after the meal until 8p.m.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers, an educational course designed for individuals caring for an aging loved one, is being offered by Greene County Extension beginning in early September.  Classes will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays, from September 3 through October 8, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson and is open to the public.  Dinner will be provided during each session.  The six-week series offers caregivers strategies for reducing stress, improving self-confidence, better communicating feelings, balancing life, increasing ability to make tough decisions, and locating helpful resources.  The program has been tested and evaluated through a grant from the U.S. Administration on Aging.
