A series of leadership workshops is coming to Greene County in early 2013, thanks to a local steering committee partnering with Greene County Extension to design and plan the program.  Greene Leadership 2013 is a six-session course designed to help participants develop leadership skills and networking abilities for both career and community.

The annual Pro-Ag Outlook and Management regional meeting sponsored by Iowa State University Extension will be an afternoon session near Carroll starting at noon on Friday, November 16, with an included lunch, at the Swan Lake Conservation Education Center.

An upcoming workshop on role modeling healthy behaviors is being sponsored by Greene County Extension for child care providers, teachers, as well as parents.  The workshop is eligible for two hours of licensing credits for child care providers.

Greene County Extension and Boone County Extension are partnering this year to host a series of meetings in Ogden on the topic of crops marketing, open free of charge to anybody interested in learning more through hearing guest speakers and participating in hands-on experiences.

Two upcoming workshops related to raising and teaching children are being sponsored by Greene County Extension for child care providers, teachers, as well as parents. One workshop will focus on building quality relationships with children, while the other will help participants learn the importance of modeling healthy behaviors for kids. Each workshop is eligible for two hours of licensing credits for child care providers.

Women involved in farm operations can learn more about risk management on the farm and value-added agriculture opportunities at an upcoming workshop series sponsored by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. Beginning October 29, sessions will be held every Monday evening at the Des Moines Area Community College, Room 219 in Boone, from 6 to 9 p.m. through December 3.

The 2012 course will provide continuing instructional credit for commercial pesticide applicators certified in categories 7D (Community Insect Management), 8 (Public Health Pest Control) and 10 (Demonstration and Research).  The course will cover topics such as equipment calibration, safe application techniques and drift, pests and pest management, and pesticide labels.

The 2012 course will provide continuing instructional credits for commercial and public pesticide applicators certified in categories 2 (Forest Pest Control), 5 (Aquatic Pest Control), 6 (Right of Way Pest Control) and 10 (Demonstration and Research).  Topics to be covered are equipment calibration and safe application techniques, and pesticide labels, pesticide stewardship, aquatic weeds, poison hemlock/wild parsnip, invasive forest pest update and waterfowl managment.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers Series starts on Thursdays, from October 18th through November 29th from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (skipping Thanksgiving Thursday), at the First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson and is open to the public.

Greene County Master Gardeners say they understand the frustrations that gardeners had with this year’s extremely dry summer, but they’re looking toward next year and bringing in a free guest speaker to talk about steps to take this fall and next spring when planting a garden following a drought.

The average retirement age nationally is now 62 with a life expectancy of 78 years (Minino, Heron & Smith, 2006). The 2010 census showed 51% of Greene County residents were over the age of 45, so this is very timely initiative for our county.
