Course Descriptions
Essentials of ArcGIS 10: This two-day course will explore the new, easy-to-use features in ArcGIS 10.x. ArcMap is a map-centric application for the editing, display, query and analysis of map data as well as map layout tasks. ArcToolbox is an application for performing geoprocessing operations such as data conversion, overlay processing, buffer creation and map transformation. ArcCatalog is a data-centric application that locates, browses and manages spatial data.

• Querying your database and selecting features by location
• Making good maps from the data
This course is intended for both new and experienced users of geographic information systems. Experience us
ing Windows-based applications is recommended.
Essential GPS: An Introduction. This one-day course teaches the basics of the Global Positioning System (GPS), how to collect data using handheld GPS equipment and how to download and manipulate the data in ArcGIS.

• Field data collection techniques
• Field data collection session including downloading
collected data to your computer
• Using GPS data in ArcGIS
Familiarity with ArcGIS is strongly recommended for this course.
Beyond Essentials: Unlocking Census Data.
Many times in the "real world" data does not come ready for us. Getting and organizing the data before beginning any GIS project requires lots of time. This tutorial you will learn to download U.S. Census data, create maps using
the data and do analysis of demographic, social, economic and housing conditions.
US Census Bureau webpage, the Excel program, ArcCatalog and ArcMap will be used in this session. Shapefiles and database files will be downloaded from the US Census Bureau webpage, and then maps will be created using
ArcCatalog and ArcMap.
Topics covered
- Download a shapefile from the US Census Bureau webpage;
- Download data from US Census Bureau webpage;
- Prepare data in EXCEL to be joined;
- Put the shapefile and the table together in ArcGIS;
- Classify the symbology by fields.
Basic level of ArcGIS is strongly recommended for this course.
Experience using Windows-based applications is recommended.
