"Ticket to Success" is Successful !
“Ticket to Success” Fremont County 2014 Junior Overnight proved to be successful, Friday and Saturday morning Feb. 14-15. The eleven member 4-H youth County Council, of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach-Fremont County planned and organized the annual event based on the State Conference. The overnight camp at the Sidney Elementary School with 38 youth in grades 4-6 attending.
Youth participated in games, educational presentations, crafts and the annual “Find the Counselor” entertainment all planned around the “Ticket to Success” theme. Foreign Exchange Students, from Sidney and Nishnabotna High Schools, helped the County Council with the educational presentations. The students and countries represented were: Khan of China; Phillip of Germany; Magnus of Norway; Sergio of Spain; and, Ahn of Vietnam.
Crafts based on the five countries included paper dragons, clay pretzels, heart ornaments, rainbow colors in Spanish, and paper fortune cookie. All meals followed traditional national dishes of each country. Supper included Norwegian meatballs, pasta, Gjetost cheese sauce, Sofrito sauce, and two Asian garlic sauces, various breads, and American celery and carrots with ranch dressing.
The evening’s snack was well liked and featured Vietnamese Popsicles and Norwegian butter cookies.
Finally, in the morning breakfast consisted of Chinese crullers and German Spaetzle and Kielbasa with or without sauerkraut.
Junior Overnight County Council committee members are Nickole Schwartz, Maryn Phillips, and Tiffany Meyer. Other County Council members are Jessica Lowthorp, Olivia Schaaf, Mallory Beard, Daniel Whitehead, Jacob Smith, Elayna Mincer, Jenna Nelson, and Kaley Severn. Fremont County Program Coordinator, Mandy Maher and County Youth Coordinator, Susan Harris, served as advisors. Other adult volunteers were Heidi Lowthorp of Sidney, Deb Webb of Des Moines, Todd Maher of Shenandoah, and Beth Mincer of Hamburg.
