Fremont Robotos' Rookie Year Proves Top Notch!
"Jose' Robert Robotos" rolled to the top during the Iowa 2012 Senior Soluctions FLL Regional Tournament held on Saturday, December 1st at Lewis Central High School. Jose' was created by the Fremont Robotos team of Bryan Pope, Justin Pope, R.J. Harris, Cody Heming and Johnathan Manchester.
The competition featured 26 teams from across southwest Iowa. Fourth-eighth grade students participated in the day-long event which highlighted their efforts in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). The Council Bluffs event was one of 12 Iowa regional qualifier events across the state. It was hosted by the ISU Extension and Outreach.
Each team brought a robot constructed using the LEGO NXT set and programmed it to complete missions on a competition mat. Teams explained their robot and programming in a technical robot design interview; the students were also judged on how well they worked together in the Core Value interview. The fourth component of the day highlighted this year's theme, Senior Solutions. Teams were required to research and create real world solutions for problems and issues senior citizens must face everyday.
It was during the program missions competition the Jose' really turned the heads of the judges! FREMONT ROBOTOS received the HONORABLE MENTION Project Design award. Jose' performed so well, he earned the second highest amount of points, 260, during one mission match. The total points for all three matches for the FREMONT ROBOTOS was 365. They also placed in the top five in the Core Values interview and the Senior Solutions presentation.
The Fremont ROBOTOS FLL season was sponsored by Rockwell Collins. Rockwell Collins agreed to cover the cost for the 2012 FLL Team Registraiton, 2012 Field Setup Kit, and 2012 Robot Set for a total of $720. Cargill Value Added Meats Division, in Nebraska City, NE, also supported the start-up costs of FLL in the Fremont County 4-H program. The team was coached by Susan Harris, County Youth Coordinator, and Tim Pope.
